Parking Lot Drills for Easy Progressing!

Warm Up & Cool Down Drills
By MTB Skills Factory

Do you have 10 minutes to spare before your buddy pulls into the trailhead lot? Or maybe you just finished a ride and the adrenaline is still pumping?

You can do these drills pretty much anywhere with very little equipment. Intentional, skill-based practice doesn't have to be over complicated.

Practice these drills to work on simple maneuvers that help dial in bigger skills:

  • Skinny practice on parking spot lines

  • "Hee-haws": Front wheel lift into rear wheel lift—a great foundation before learning to bunny hop

  • Bail and emergency stop practice

  • Track stands or very slow pedaling

  • Roll downs/drops on curbs

  • Front wheel lifts over sticks

  • Pedaling front wheel lifts into wheelies (easier on a slight incline!)

  • Rear wheel lifts / rear wheel lifts from side to side

  • Angulation and rotation for cornering

  • Bunny hops

  • Ratcheting in a figure 8 or small circle

  • Rock dodge: Slalom where the rock goes between both wheels. Bonus points if you're going slow!

The list goes on and on, but pick two or three skills you're excited about and practice them consistently before or after your ride at least once a week for a few months. See if it helps your bike handling or confidence—we have a good feeling it will!
